Lawyer Shot In Head At Desk
A lawyer is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot in the head while he sat at his desk in a quiet market town.
James Ward, 59, is understood to have "life-threatening" injuries after the attack, which onlookers said was carried out by a man in tweeds.
Mr Ward leads a law practice in Devizes, Wiltshire that specialises in family law, personal injury, general claims and residential conveyancing.
His family were at his bedside last night at the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, where Mr Ward was taken by air ambulance.
A 62-year-old suspect was arrested 35 minutes after the shooting by armed police in the village of Rowde, after an emergency call yesterday afternoon.
He is now in custody and police have recovered a weapon they believe was used in the incident.
It is unclear whether the two men knew each other or what the shooter’s motive may have been.
A number of roads around Market Place in Devizes were cordoned off by police to allow the major crime investigation team to examine the scene.
The Conservative MP for the area, Claire Perry, tweeted last night: "All thoughts and prayers with the victim of the tragic shooting today in Devizes and his family. What an awful, shocking thing to happen."
