Sir Elton John To Sue The Times
Sir Elton John will sue the Times newspaper for libel over the publication of articles he claims falsely accused him of tax avoidance.
Two articles were published with the by-line “secrets of the tax avoiders’, I which the newspaper stated Patrick McKenna of Ingenious Media was Sir Elton's former accountant.
This however was untrue. The paper published a correction and acknowledged that Mr McKenna had never been Sir Elton’s accountant.
However, the star’s lawyers described the correction, published on 22 June, as "wholly inadequate".
They said the four-line apology did not have equal prominence to the original articles, which appeared on pages one and six of the newspaper, adding that it "deliberately ignored the defamatory impact" of the original article.
