Closing Ceremony Narrowly Beat Opening For Viewing Figures
An average of 23.2 million tuned in to watch the closing ceremony of the Olympics, narrowly beating Danny Boyle’s opening event.
22.9m viewers watched the closing event on BBC1, giving the broadcaster a huge 80.7% share of the TV audience. Another 202,000 watched via one of the BBC’s dedicated Olympics channels, and over 80,000 watched in 3D on the BBC HD channel.
The popularity of the event was confirmed by the fact that almost 19m viewers were still tuned in at midnight.
The closing ceremony narrowly beat Danny Boyles opening which received an average of 23.02m.
However, the opening retained bragging rights by winning the greater number of overall peak viewers, with a five-minute high of 26.9 million against the closing event's 26.3 million at 9.35pm.

The company announced it has begun a consultation on the proposed closure of part of its business in Station Road, Chepstow, affecting 150 people.
