Amnesty bid to cut gun crime
The government has launched a bid to help rid the streets of illegal guns today with a month-long national firearms amnesty - the first in seven years.
The amnesty offers an opportunity for anyone with illegal or unwanted firearms to hand them in without facing prosecution for their possession.

London-Wide Gun Amnesty Underway
A London-wide gun amnesty has gotten underway, allowing people to anonymously leave firearms and ammunition into their local police stations. The Metropolitan Police last ran a gun amnesty in 2008 and say they are particularly interested in stopping antique weapons from falling into the hands of gangs in the city.

8,000 guns taken off streets during gun amnesty
Around 8,000 guns have been handed in to police during the first half of the month-long national firearms amnesty. In the first week, 3,775 firearms were handed in, including 563 handguns, along with 71,000 rounds of ammunition.

As the deadline on the national gun amnesty runs out today, the Home Office has reported that over 17,000 firearms have been handed over to police.

Giving an amnesty to almost 500,000 people who are currently living illegally in the UK and allowing them to work legally could raise around £1 billion per year in taxes, a report has claimed. The Institute of Public Policy Research calculated that the forced deportation of illegal immigrants cost taxpayers around £4.
