Surprise Jump In Manufacturing Sector

Domestic orders last month boosted manufacturing output and unexpectedly eased the downturn in the sector across the UK.

The closely-watched Markit/CIPS manufacturing purchasing managers' index rose to a four-month high of 49.5 in August from a downwardly revised 45.2 in July.

But it is still not in growth, as the figure remains below 50.

£1m For Welsh Mining Disaster Families

The families of four men killed in a mining disaster in Wales almost a year ago have been given a total sum of £1m, raised through a public appeal.

The sum will be divided among the families of David Powell, 50, Charles Breslin, 62, Philip Hill, 44, and Garry Jenkins, 39.

The four men lost their lives in a flooding disaster at Gleision mine in south Wales on September 15 2011.

Wayne Thomas, chairman of Swansea Valley miners' appeal fund, said the £1.091m raised was phenomenal, and it was challenging to divide the money up among families of varying sizes and types.

About £100,000 has already been spent on funeral and other urgent expenses, which could not wait until the official calculations were complete.

It is hoped that all the relatives will receive their share before the 15 September anniversary.
