Shafilea's Mother Seeks Right To Appeal

A woman who was jailed for life for murdering her daughter is seeking permission to appeal against her conviction.

Farzana Ahmed was jailed for a minimum of 25 years when she and her husband Iftikhar were found guilty of murdering their daughter Shafilea.

The CPS has now said the Court of Appeal has received an appeal application from Mrs Ahmed.

Riots Continue In Belfast

A second night of rioting in North Belfast has left seven police officers in hospital.

Petrol bombs, bricks and fireworks were thrown at police during trouble in the Carlisle Circus area of the city, which erupted on Sunday after a parade by a flute band.

Phone-Hacking Probe Could Cost £40m

Investigations into phone hacking, corrupt payments and privacy breaches could cost the police £40m and keep nearly 100 police officers on the case for the next four years.

Sue Akers of the Metropolitan Police gave the figure to the Home Affairs Select Committee and said there were likely to be 1,069 victims of phone hacking.

East London Murder Appeal
Detectives have appealed for information about the murder of a woman in Manor Park. Aliza Ahmed Mirza, 18, a student from Ilford, died on Saturday 3 April. Police had been called to reports of a collapsed female. It is believed she was stabbed while in the Forest View Road area. Miss Mirza was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.

Former police officers arrested in Lynette White murder case
Five retired police officers have been arrested as part of an investigation into the murder of a Cardiff prostitute 17 years ago, South Wales police have confirmed. Twenty-year-old Lynette White was found murdered in a flat in the Butetown area of Cardiff on Valentine’s Day, 1988.

Glasgow Sex Assault Appeal
Detectives in Glasgow are continuing enquiries after a woman was indecently assaulted on Saturday in the Govan area. The 37-year-old woman was in a car park at Water Row, just off Govan Road, at around 8.30pm when she noticed a man lying on the ground.

Release Of Police Killer Described As 'Sickening'
The release of a man convicted of killing three unarmed police officers in 1966 has been described as "sickening". Harry Roberts, now aged 78, has been released from prison after serving 48 years for 1966 murders of three unarmed police officers in Shepherd's Bush in west London.

Review launched following Israeli embassy police row
Metropolitan Police chief Sir Ian Blair has ordered an inquiry after a Muslim police officer was excused from guarding the Israeli embassy in London.
