Solder Killed By Roadside Bomb In Afghanistan
A soldier from The Light Dragoons has been killed in Afghanistan after his vehicle hit a roadside bomb, the Ministry of Defence says.
The incident took place in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province, said Lt Col Richard Parry, spokesman for UK Forces Afghanistan.
The soldier's next of kin have been informed.
The death brings the number of British military deaths since operations began in Afghanistan in 2001 to 427.
Unexplained Body May Have Been Stowaway
An inquiry has begun after the body of a man was found in a residential area in south-west London.
Police were called to Portman Avenue in Mortlake at about 07:55 BST on Sunday after the discovery of the body.
One line of inquiry for officers is whether the unidentified man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was a stowaway who fell from a passing plane.
Mortlake lies on the Heathrow flight path. The death is being treated as unexplained by police.
Rain Blamed For Decline In Butterfly Numbers
A sharp decline in the number of butterflies in Britain has been blamed on the wettest summer for a century.
A study of 223,000 butterflies and day-flying moths found the populations of 15 of the 21 species had fallen. Eleven common butterfly types had decreased by more than a third compared with last year, according to the Big Butterfly Count 2012.
Butterfly Conservation said the heaviest rainfall over the summer months for 100 years was putting many already threatened species at risk.
