More refuges planned for domestic violence victims
Nearly £19 million in funding is being allocated by the government to help build and develop refuges in England over the next 12 months for women and children fleeing violent partners.
The money will be used in partnership with local refuge groups, registered social landlords and local authorities to ensure better availability of safe accommodation for women and children.
The Housing Corporation is contributing £9.9 million to the total investment and will assess the bids, ensuring that the money is allocated to projects around the country.
Last year, domestic violence accounted for 15% of all local authority homelessness acceptances. It has also resulted in over 130,000 households having to be re-housed over the last seven years and for 35% of all murders in the last five years.
