Lone 72-Year-Old Sailor Survives Wave Ordeal
A 72-year-old lone sailor was swept off his yacht by a wave in force eight gales before another wave pushed the craft back under him saving his life.
Gerry Beard was close to completing an 11-day trip from Reykjavik in Iceland to his home in Shieldaig, in Wester Ross, when he was swept overboard north of the Butt of Lewis on Saturday afternoon.
Mr Beard fell back onto his yacht, Meris, and into the cockpit where he activated a distress beacon.
Mr Beard, an experienced sailor, said: "This wave picked me up and took the doors off the cabin.
"I thought 'I'm on my own here'. Then all the water went away and the boat came back towards me and I dropped back into the boat."
Powerboat Racer Dies In Race Crash
Powerboat racer Mike Lovell, from Southampton, has died after his craft flipped over during a race in Dorset.
Lovell suffered multiple injuries when his boat crashed in Weymouth, on Sunday.
Despite being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital, race organisers P1 SuperStock confirmed Mr Lovell had died overnight.
His navigator Dan Whapples, also from Southampton, remains in a serious but stable condition.
The pair were competing in the national powerboat racing championship in Weymouth Bay when the crash happened, at about 14:30.
Ranulph Fiennes Lead Antartic Expedition
British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes is to lead the first team on foot across Antarctica during the southern winter.
The six-month expedition next year is being called the Coldest Journey, crossing terrain where the temperature has hit -90C.
It will be 68-year-old Sir Ranulph's latest record attempt. Past feats have seen him go pole to pole and climb Everest as a pensioner.
"We do it because we like to break world records," says Sir Ranulph, his bushy eyebrows icing up while on a training session close to the Arctic.
"Sometimes we don't succeed, but it's what we go for. It's our specialty."
