Solider Gives Birth In Afghanistan Unaware She Was Pregnant
A British solider in Afghanistan has given birth to a baby boy having been completely unaware she was pregnant.
The servicewoman gave birth on Tuesday in Camp Bastion, in the Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence have confirmed, saying: "Mother and baby are both in a stable condition."
The woman, a Royal Artillery gunner who has not been named by the MoD, only learned she was about to give birth after complaining of stomach pains.
The child was conceived before she arrived in Afghanistan in March.
In a statement, the MoD said: "It is not military policy to allow servicewomen to deploy on operations if they are pregnant. In this instance the MoD was unaware of her pregnancy."
A specialist paediatric team from Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital is to fly to Afghanistan in the next few days, the statement added, "in order to provide appropriate care for mother and baby on the flight home".
The baby was born five weeks prematurely.

The 22-year-old woman, who was in labour, was getting ready to leave her home with her partner to go to the hospital when a gang raided her home. She was hit with a baseball bat and slashed with a knife.

Commander calls for more Nato troops for Afghanistan
Nato's top commander has urged member nations to provide more troops in Afghanistan to support the current battle against Taliban militants. General James Jones said that the military alliance had been surprised by the "level of intensity" of attacks in southern Afghanistan since Nato troops moved into the region in July.

Report raises fears over premature birth drug
A drug, which is widely prescribed to pregnant women at risk of premature birth may actually do more harm than good, a report has suggested. The study, conducted by baby charity Tommy's, found that the antibiotic metronidazole, which is given to around 1 in 20 pregnant women, doubled the risk of pre-term delivery.
