Aid delayed as fighting continues in Basra
British forces in Basra were meeting continued armed resistance in parts of the city's outskirts.
UK troops are continuing with their efforts to secure the city in southern Iraq before aid shipments can be brought in as part of the humanitarian relief.
Yesterday troops were attempting to turnaround three days of anarchy and serious looting in the city streets.
In the House of Commons, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, told MPs that the role of special British police advisors, similar to the tactic used in Bosnia, was one of the measures under serious consideration.
Reports from Basra indicate that in some parts of the city looting had diminished, but commanders on the ground were still primarily concerned with dealing with irregular and sporadic Iraqi resistance.
The British have offered a gun amnesty in Basra, but concerns remain both about the security situation and the inability to assure safe passage for humanitarian aid provided by the main aid agencies.
