Man Admits Causing Toddler Death Blast
A man has admitted causing a blast which killed a toddler and destroyed eight homes in Greater Manchester.
Two-year-old Jamie Heaton was killed in a gas explosion as he watched television at home in Buckley Street, Shaw.
Andrew Partington, 27, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Manchester Crown Court. The accused appeared via videolink.
He also admitted causing £1.2m of damage to properties.
The incident occurred on 26 June 2012.
Judge Andrew Gilbart QC said jail was the only option for offences of this nature.
Mr Partington was remanded in custody until 11 February. He will then appear back in court and will be sentenced following the preparation of psychological assessments.
Partington, an unemployed father of six, suffered 40% burns and a broken back in the blast.
About 40 families were relocated to a refuge centre after the explosion damaged around a dozen properties.
Jamie's mother, Michelle Heaton, survived the explosion because she had gone outside to hang out her washing.
She and neighbours attempted to save the toddler following the the blast, which resulted in the evacuation of 175 homes.
Mrs Heaton and husband Kenny were in court with family and friends, some of whom wiped tears from their eyes as they listened to Mr Partington's pleas.
