Manchester City Council To Cut 900 Posts
Manchester City Council is to axe up to 900 jobs.
The authority confirmed the cuts as it attempts to save around £80m over the next two years in reaction to the £170m gov funding cuts introduced last year.
Council Leader Sir Richard Leese said: "Staffing costs are a significant proportion of expenditure and we believe that the necessary reduction could be in the region of 700 to 900 posts.
"As a result we are introducing a voluntary early retirement and severance schemes, although no applications will be approved until after we have received our settlement from government and on that basis have set a budget.
"The council remains committed to aiming to avoid compulsory redundancies."
Two-thousand posts have already been lost through budget cuts.

Wolverhampton City Council To Cut 1,000 Jobs
Wolverhampton City Council has said 1,000 council jobs could be cut by 2015. It added that it has "no choice" but to make the large scale budget cuts which will impact on both services and jobs in the area. Council Leader Roger Lawrence has described the news as "a dark day for Wolverhampton".

Manchester City Council To Cut 2,000 Jobs
Due to government spending cuts, Manchester City Council are to cut 2,000 jobs. After changes to local authority grants left a huge hole in the Labour-run council's finances, a 17% reduction in the workforce will need to be implemented. Between now and 2012, officers will need to “quickly” find £110m of savings, £60m more than expected last year.

Tata Steel Cut 900 Jobs Nationwide
900 jobs are to be axed by Tata Steel across the UK, almost 600 of which will be at plants in Wales. It is understood most of the Welsh losses will be management and administrative posts in Port Talbot and Llanwern near Newport. 155 jobs in Yorkshire will go, alongside 120 in the West Midlands and 30 on Teesside.

Drinks Giant To Cut 900 Scottish Jobs
Drinks giant Diageo has announced it is to axe 900 jobs in Scotland as part of a major restructuring of its operations. The plans mean the company's Port Dundas distillery in Glasgow will close, along with its packaging plant in Kilmarnock. Diageo will also be outsourcing some of its warehousing operations.
