Mary Bell requests permanent anonymity
Lawyers for Mary Bell, who was convicted of the murder of two boys in 1968, and who was then aged 11, have requested that the High Court protect her and her daughter's identities in perpetuity.
Citing a risk of possible vigilante action against the pair, as well as European Human Rights legislation, Mr Edward Fitzgerald QC told senior family judge Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss that Bell's youth at the time of the crime made her case unusual.
He also pointed out that Bell's daughter, whose identity is currently the subject of an injunction pending a legal decision, was an innocent party who had a right to protection from harassment.
The case is particularly controversial as Bell reportedly received £50,000 when her biography, 'Cries Unheard', was published in 1998.
Bell, now 46, was released from custody in 1980.
