Police Federation Chairman Dies Aged 57

The chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, Mr Paul McKeever, has died in hospital.

57-year-old Mr McKeever, who was due to retire on January 31, suffered a suspected embolism, the federation, which represents rank and file officers, has said.

As one of the police's most visible spokesmen, he clashed repeatedly with the government over cuts to police budgets and force numbers, which he argued were putting public safety at risk.

The federation praised Mr McKeever, who took on the post in 2008, as a "true gentleman" and "truly outstanding police officer".

Coronation St Actor Faces Child Abuse Charges

A former Coronation Street actor has appeared in court charged with historical child sex offences.

42-year-old Andrew Lancel, is accused of five counts of indecent assault on a child under 16.

The actor, who played Frank Foster in the ITV soap, appeared at a preliminary hearing at Liverpool Crown Court under his real name, Andrew Watkinson.

His next hearing will be 15 April when he will be expected to enter a plea with a trial date set for 3 June.

Archaeological Dig Doesn’t Find WWII Planes In Burma

Archaeologists hunting for World War II Spitfires in Burma believe there are no planes buried at the sites where they have been digging, the BBC has reported.

It is understood that evidence does not support the original claim that as many as 124 Spitfires were buried at the end of the war.

Wargaming.net, the firm financing the dig, has also said there are no planes, however the project leader David Cundall says they are looking in the wrong place.
