Harbour Storm Damage

Fishing harbours affected by the recent storm damage are benefiting from an additional £1 million for emergency works.

The storms, which were caused by an unusual combination of south easterly gales, low pressures and high tides, were described as the worst in decades and caused damage across Scotland.

The funding will be used towards the costs to repair harbours, sea walls, and quaysides to ensure fisheries harbours remained operational. Talks are ongoing with other harbours who have been affected by storm damage.

Elderly Man Dies In Crash

A 92-year-old has died in a crash.

The man, from Lampeter, was a passenger in the vehicle when it crashed on the A485 between Llanybydder and Cwmann. It overturned and ended up in a field in Carmarthenshire .

New Rules Announced On Security At Civil Nuclear Construction Sites

New regulations on security at civil nuclear sites undergoing construction have been laid before Parliament.

The new regulations extend the scope of security regulation set out in the Nuclear Industries Security Regulations 2003 (as amended) and are due to come into force on 28 February.

Baroness Verma of Leicester, Minister for Energy & Climate Change, said: "Ensuring the security of the civil nuclear industry is a top priority for the Government. We keep security arrangements under constant review and adopt a flexible and responsive approach."

British Diplomats Pulled Out Of Iran
Some of Britain’s diplomats will be pulled out of Iran following an attack on its embassy in the capital, Tehran, yesterday, reports the BBC. According to the report some staff will be leaving for their own safety but no numbers in regard to the amount leaving the country have been released.

Regulatory body for security guards and bouncers launched
In a shake up of the private security industry announced today bouncers and wheel clampers will have to be licensed and regulated by the new Security Industry Authority (SIA). The measures are designed to protect the public from rogue operators and create higher standards of recruitment and training for private security operatives and managers.

£4M For Nuclear Security Abroad
The UK will make a contribution of £4M to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Nuclear Security Fund for 2011-13. This will support work to enhance global nuclear security. The contribution was made at the IAEA’s Board of Governors meeting this week in Vienna.

PM unveils nuclear weapons plans
Prime Minister Tony Blair has told the Commons that the UK's current Trident missile system will have to be replaced. Speaking to the House of Commons, Mr Blair said that the decision to maintain the government's independent nuclear power deterrent was "fully consistent with all our international obligations".

Sellafield set to reduce radioactive discharges
Sellafield, the British Nuclear Fuels-run power station in Cumbria, is set to cut discharges of a certain type of radioactive material by 90% – waste matter which had been pumped into the Irish Sea.
