15-Year Low For Pension Scheme Membership
Just 46% of the British workforce are members of a workplace pension scheme, as figures fell for the 11th year running.
Data collected prior to the introduction of auto-enrolment in October 2012, showed the proportion of all workers joining a workplace scheme was at its lowest level since 1997 when the figures were first collated. In that year, 55% of workers were paying into schemes, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show.
The figures only show the percentage of employees who are active members of a pension scheme and not how many workforces offer one.
It is thought the fall could be driven by the closure of schemes by employers and workers' reluctance to commit to long-term savings.
