Man in court over Longhurst murder
A 35-year-old man has appeared in court today charged with the murder of music teacher Jane Longhurst.
Graham James Coutts, 35, from Waterloo Street in Hove, appeared in Brighton Magistrates Court this morning. He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
Mr Coutts was remanded in custody to appear before Lewes Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on May 12.
The accused was arrested at his home on Monday night and taken to Brighton police station, where he was formally charged last night. Mr Coutts had been arrested last Thursday night but only to be released on police bail on Friday evening.
It has been 11 days since Miss Longhurst's body was discovered at Wiggonholt Common, near Pulborough, Sussex. The 31-year-old music teacher was reported missing on March 14. Her body was found at the popular beauty spot on April 19 after an attempt had been made to set fire to it.

Abu Hamza remanded in custody
The radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri has been remanded in custody at Bow Street Magistrates Court today. Abu Hamza, who faces a total of nine charges, appeared by videolink from Belmarsh prison. He was remanded in prison until July 23. The 46-year-old was arrested on May 27 on an extradition warrant served by the US government.

A court heard today how a British woman killed her two children in a hotel room in Spain while they slept, and then spent the night with their bodies. 43-year-old Lianne Smith has admitted smothering Rebecca, five, and 11-month-old Daniel, in Lloret de Mar, Costa Brava, in May 2010.

The first new look UK passport has been issued today to five-year-old Elliot Coutts Miller. Elliot, who attends Shortwood Infant School, Staines in Surrey, received his passport at the London passport office based in Globe House in Victoria.
