Posthumous Award To Be Sought For Essex PC
"All appropriate commendations and awards" will be sought for an Essex police officer shot dead while tackling a gunman.
Ruling that the officer was “unlawfully killed”, coroner for Essex and Thurrock Caroline Beasley-Murray said PC Ian Dibell deserved a medal for gallantry after he died in Clacton last July.
PC Dibell was killed by 64-year-old Peter Reeve, who took his own life the following morning in a churchyard near Chelmsford.
A coroners inquest on Monday was the first time evidence surrounding PC Dibell's death had been aired in public and Assistant Chief Constable Julia Wortley said the force was “grateful” for the coroners remarks.
"We will be pursuing all appropriate commendations and awards, posthumous awards for Ian," ACC Wortley said. "We can now take further actions and proceedings of that nature."
During the inquest, it emerged PC Dibell was shot as he tried to stop Peter Reeve, 64, firing a revolver at two members of the public.
