OFT Investigating Web Games

The Office of Fair Trading is to investigate web and phone games aimed at children that charge for extras.

In many of the games players are expected to buy virtual items, such as coins or gems, in order to progress through the game.

The OFT wants to find out if these games put undue pressure on children to pay for additional content, and want to hear from parents who have seen firms aggressively pushing in-game content to children.

The investigation follows a number of reports of children spending large sums while playing the mobile games.
