HMRC To Investigate 100 Firms Over Unpaid Internships

100 companies have been referred to HM Revenue and Customs for investigation after the government heard from a campaign group that they might be breaking the law through their use of unpaid interns.

Junior employment minister Jo Swinson referred the companies, which have not been identified publicly but are understood to include a number of household names, following a meeting she had with Intern Aware, who campaigns against the abuse of the internship process.

It is understood that while companies are free to offer work experience, companies are breaking employment laws if they do not pay at least the minimum wage.

Swinson said: "The law on the national minimum wage is clear. If somebody on a work experience placement or internship is a worker under NMW (national minimum wage) legislation, then they are entitled to the minimum wage."

Possible refunds for holiday camp staff
Staff working for holiday camps such as Butlins could be refunded pay after they were charged for electricity in their accommodation. The GMB union said that around 20,000 employees, working for Butlins, Haven Holidays and British Holiday in 50 camps across the UK might be eligible for refunds.

National Minimum Wage To Rise
The government has approved a rise in minimum wage by 12p to £6.31 an hour. Business Secretary Vince Cable confirmed the government has accepted the independent Low Pay Commission’s recommendations for this year’s adult and youth rates. The following rates will come into effect on 1 October 2013: • the adult rate will increase by 12p to £6.

Govt Name Employers Not Paying Minimum Wage
The Business Minister Jo Swinson has produced a list of 37 UK employers who have failed to pay their workers the National Minimum Wage. More than £170,000 is owed to workers at a range of companies, which includes H&M and Welcome Break, the service stations operator.
