Scientist Jailed For Faking Research Data
A scientist has been jailed for three months for faking research data for experimental anti-cancer drugs.
Steven Eaton, from Cambridgeshire, has become the first person in the UK to be jailed under scientific safety laws.
The 47-year-old was working at the Edinburgh branch of US pharmaceutical firm Aptuit in 2009 when he came up with the scam.
When bosses at his firm scrutinised his work, they noticed that it was fraudulent.
They stopped work on the project that Eaton was involved in, and reported him to watchdogs at the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
Investigators there discovered that Eaton had been selectively reporting research data since 2003.
Briton Extradited To US On Sex Offences Charge
A 46-year-old British man has appeared before a federal court in Ohio on charges of child sex offences.
Richard Castle allegedly used the internet to coerce a juvenile before flying to Dayton, Ohio, in June 2011 to engage in illegal sexual activity.
He was arrested at his home in Northampton on 12 January 2012 by Metropolitan Police officers and was extradited to the US on 12 April 2013.
He is being held without bail pending trial on a date not yet confirmed.
Juror To Be Prosecuted For Contempt Over Facebook Post
A juror, who allegedly wrote on Facebook that he wanted to "f**k up a paedophile" during the trial of a convicted child sex offender, will be prosecuted for contempt of court.
Kasim Davey was discharged as a juror in the trial in December when he wrote on Facebook: "Woooow I wasn't expecting to be in a jury Deciding a paedophile's fate, I've always wanted to F**k up a paedophile & now I'm within the law!."
He denied posting the message – which is in breach of laws on contempt of court – when initially questioned by the judge at Wood Green crown court in London. Davey was a juror at the trial of Adam Kephalas, a convicted child-sex offender who was given a suspended 12-month prison sentence in January this year.
He will now be prosecuted by the attorney general for "an act likely to interfere with the due administration of justice".
