Godolphin Trainer Banned For Eight Years
Godolphin racehorse trainer, Mahmood al Zarooni, has been banned for eight years after admitting to doping offences.
Following a disciplinary panel hearing in London, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) also confirmed that fifteen of Mr al Zarooni's horses have been suspended from running for a six-month period.
The BHA revealed the news on Twitter, writing: "Mahmood al Zarooni has been disqualified for eight years following today's Disciplinary Panel hearing."
Eleven horses tested positive for banned substances at Godolphin's Newmarket stables last month, and Mr al Zarooni admitted to a further four at his yard had also been given the substances.
On Monday, the trainer said he did not realise he had broken any rules as the horses were not racing at the time. In a written statement yesterday, al Zarooni apologised for the "catastrophic error" he had made.
He said: "First and foremost, I would like to apologise to his highness, Sheikh Mohammed, as well as all those involved in Godolphin and the public.
"I accept it was my responsibility to be aware of the rules regarding prohibited substances in Britain. I can only apologise. I have made a catastrophic error."
The suspension imposed on the fifteen racehorses was imposed by the BHA and separate from the Disciplinary Panel hearing involving al Zarooni.
