55 Beaches Meet New Tougher EU Standards
Over 50 beaches in England have been awarded Blue Flags after meeting tougher new EU standards.
At 55, the number of beaches being awarded this year is down from 79 in 2012, but they were subjected to much tougher standards for the first time this year, under the new EU Bathing Waters Directive.
According to the BBC, Thanet in Kent won eight awards, while the Isle of Wight, Bournemouth and Poole in Dorset, and Torbay in Devon each received four awards.
Another 133 beaches were rated clean enough to be awarded Seaside Awards - formerly known as Quality Coast Awards.
