Guard Injured In Prison Attack

An investigation has been launched at Full Sutton jail near York after a prison guard was attacked.

The warder is said to have been kidnapped and beaten at the maximum-security jail on Sunday.

It is understood the incident at Full Sutton lasted for four hours and occurred after extremist prisoners reacted to a request by the prison imam to pray for Drummer Rigby.

Drummer Lee Rigby was killed in Woolwich, south-east London last Wednesday after he was hit by a car. He was then attacked by two men armed with knives and was stabbed and hacked to death.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "An incident involving three prisoners took place at HMP Full Sutton on May 26 from 4.25pm and was successfully resolved at 8.40pm after staff intervened.

"A police investigation is ongoing."

It was thought one of the guards had suffered a broken jaw in the attack, while The Sun has reported that a female guard was also injured as she tried to stop the inmates from dragging away her male colleague. A spokeswoman for the prison service would not confirm reports that one of the warders was held hostage and stabbed, or give details of the identities of the prisoners involved.
