Quarterly figures show extra 47,000 in work

The latest government figures have shown that the number of people with jobs rose by 47,000 in the last three months - and by 283,000 since last year.

According to the statistics, almost three quarters of the working age population are now in work.

Unemployment has fallen slightly by 2,100 this month with the number of people claiming benefit steady at 3.1% for the 16th consecutive month.

Minister for Work Nick Brown said:"Vacancies remain at high levels. There are over 10,000 new jobs notified to Jobcentres every working day and we know that many more are available from other sources. This demonstrates the dynamic nature of the UK labour market.

"Our active labour market policies, delivered through Jobcentre Plus, provide flexible solutions at a local level - enabling all those seeking work to access these opportunities."

Average earnings growth was 3.4% in the year to March 2003, up 0.3% from the February rate.

Plans Announced To Make Young People Work For Benefits
The Prime Minister has announced a proposal for 18 to 21-year-olds claiming benefits to do daily work experience. The proposed reform, known as Community Work Programme, would see young people not in work, education or training, required to complete daily work experience, alongside continuing to look for work in order to qualify for benefits.

UK Property Prices 'Still Falling'
House prices in the three months to October were 1.2% lower than in the preceding three months, according to the Halifax. The financial services provider, part of the Lloyds Banking Group, said prices in October were 2.3% lower than at the end of 2009 on a seasonally adjusted basis (-1.2% unadjusted).

UK Unemployment Falls By 4,000
Latest figures released from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) fell by 4,000 in the three months to June, bringing the total number of people out of work in the UK to 2.51 million. The number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance also fell by 29,000 to 1.4 million. However, the unemployment rate remains at 7.
