New Minister For Trade And Investment Appointed
The chief executive at BT is to leave the telecoms giant to become minister for trade and investment.
Ian Livingston will replace former HSBC chief executive and chairman Lord Green when he joins the House of Lords. Lord Green has served since 2011 but is approaching retirement.
Livingston became the youngest FTSE 100 finance director at the age of 32 when he was with Dixons.
He joined BT in the same role ahead of becoming chief executive in June 2008, aged 43.
He will join the House of Lords ahead of taking up the front bench role in December.

Tough Stance On Burglaries By Top Judge
The head of the judiciary in England and Wales has urged courts to hand down stiffer sentences to domestic burglars. The Lord Chief Justice, Igor Judge, sent out a firm message to criminals today, in a strongly-worded judgment. Lord Judge rejected calls from six convicted burglars to have their jail terms reduced.

Britain is marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar with a series of events across the country. More than 6,000 events are planned to take place throughout the UK over the weekend, to mark the Royal Navy victory over the combined Spanish and France fleets on October 21, 1805.

MPs Critical Of Ongoing UKBA Backlog
A backlog of unresolved immigration cases are still plaguing the UK Border Agency, according to MPs. The agency has supplied incorrect data for six years and former head Lin Homer "repeatedly misled" the Home Affairs Committee, the MPs said. Accusations Ms Homer, now the head of Revenue and Customs, said were unfair and untrue.

Business mogul Sir Alan Sugar took his seat in the House of Lords this afternoon, amid talks of a mechanism that would allow life peers to renounce their titles. Lord Sugar, as he will be known, was appointed to the Upper Chamber by Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The BBC Apprentice star will operate as an 'enterprise tzar' for the Government.
