UK deploys aid experts to Iraq

The UK is sending 24 civilian experts to Iraq as part of the government's commitment to support the work of the Organisation for Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance (ORHA) in rebuilding the country.

These volunteers are civil servants from a number of Whitehall departments including the Foreign Office, Department of Health and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. This will bring the current UK contingent in ORHA to 44, and more are expected to follow.

The civil servants will spend three months working in support of ORHA with Iraqi administrators, and will make specific recommendations for further UK support in their areas of expertise.

Foreign Office Minister Mike O'Brien said: "The deployment of these volunteers follows closely on the deployment of police advisers to Basra and Baghdad. And we have already reopened our diplomatic mission in Baghdad, as well as sending out a Special Representative to help take forward the political process.

"We will continue to look for any and all opportunities to make further significant contributions to rebuilding Iraq."
