Small Earthquake Hits North Wales

A small earthquake, measuring 2.8 in magnitude has hit north Wales.

The quake was reported late on Wednesday night, just before 11.30pm, the British Geological Survey (BGS) has said.

The epicentre of the quake was located on the Lleyn peninsula, Gwynedd, but was felt throughout the north Gwynedd region.

It is the second one to hit the area in recent times. Last month, a small earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale happened just half a kilometre away and was followed by several smaller tremors over the next few days.

Earlier on Wednesday, a smaller tremor in Blaenau Gwent was also recorded by the BGS, measuring 0.9.

The organisation said last night's tremor in Gwynedd occurred 8km underground, off Porth Colmon, and was felt in Bangor, Caernarfon and Holyhead on Anglesey.

There were two tremors recorded two tremors, but the BGS has suggested there may have been a third.

Julian Bukits, of the BGS, said there had been 70 reports from people about Wednesday's tremor so far, compared to 480 for last month's quake.
