Drunk Juror Given Electronic Tag
A woman has been given an electronic tag after she arrived for jury service drunk, the BBC has reported.
Sharon Wright, 51, was a juror in a drugs trial being held at Glasgow Sheriff Court last month.
When she did not arrive at the court, a taxi was sent to collect her. On arrival, she told the sheriff she was drunk and was remanded in custody.
After admitting contempt of court, Ms Wright was told to wear an electronic tag for six months and remain at home each day between the hours of 7pm and 7am.
Imposing the sentence, Sheriff Alan Mackenzie said Wright had "longstanding and entrenched problems with alcohol consumption".
He said: "While serving as a member of a jury you arrived at court almost two hours late and when you arrived you were very obviously under the influence of alcohol.
To serve on a jury is to perform a vitally important public duty. The responsibilities of jury service must be fulfilled with the utmost care.
"Routinely, the decisions of juries have far reaching consequences in the lives of others, whether accused persons or the victims of crime.
"Your conduct was deplorable."
UK Enjoys Meteor Shower
People from all around the UK enjoyed the Perseid meteor shower on Monday night.
The shower, which reached its peak on Monday night and in the early hours of Tuesday morning, occurred when the Earth passed through a stream of dusty debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet.
As the debris reaches the atmosphere, it burns up to create streaks of light across the night sky.
As many as 60 to 100 streaks were reported to be viewed at the peak of the display.
The comet Swift-Tuttle last came relatively close to Earth in 1992. It is now not due to come as close to the Earth again until the middle of the next decade.
