Two Men Killed After Car Overturns

West Midlands Police has confirmed two men died after the car they were travelling in hit roadside railings and overturned.

The accident happened at Sandwell last night (14 August).

It is understood the men were driving along Park Lane, approaching the junction with Camp Lane, around 10.10pm when the Honda Civic they were in struck the metal barriers and flipped onto its roof.

A 28-year-old man suffered a serious head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 23-year-old man was taken to hospital, but later died from injuries he had sustained in the crash.

It is believed both men are from the Handsworth area.

PC Karl Davies from West Midlands Police's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "It doesn't appear any other vehicles were involved or that anyone else was injured − but we can't say for certain at this stage exactly what happened so we're keen to hear from any witnesses.

"Park Lane is a fairly busy thoroughfare and we are hoping people will have been in the area and saw what happened.

"Two men have tragically lost their lives and two families have been left shocked and grief stricken at their sudden death. Both families will be supported by specially trained family liaison officers at this difficult time."

The police urged any witnesses to call the Collision Investigation Unit at Perry Barr by dialling 101.

A third man, aged 23 and from Wallasay, had been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs.

Appeal After Shetland Ponies Are Assaulted

Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault on two Shetland ponies in Hebden Bridge.

The Upper Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to speak to anyone who has information about the incident in which two animals had their tails cut off below the bone.

The incident happened overnight on 9 August after the two ponies were injured by someone who cut off their tails at Higher Blackshaw Farm, Blackshaw Head, Hebden Bridge, a police statement said. It added that while the animals were not left bleeding, the loss of the tails will have left them in discomfort.

PC Fiona Igo of the Upper Valley NPT, said: "We are appealing for witnesses or information about this unpleasant incident which has understandably caused distress to the animals owner.

"While the tail was cut off below the bone the loss of them will cause the animals distress as horses use them to swat away flys and insects.

"Officers are investigating whether the tails may have been cut off to sell on and we would ask anyone who has information to contact us on at the Upper Valley NPT on 101 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111."

Mayor Banned From Wearing Chains Of Office

A Nottinghamshire council has reportedly banned its mayor from wearing his chains of office.

According to a report by the BBC, supporters of Tony Egginton – who has been mayor of Mansfield since 2002 – called the decision "disgusting".

Mr Egginton became the town's first elected mayor in 2002 to end almost 30 years of Labour leadership.

He is quoted as saying: "The main issue for me is for the people to enjoy seeing their elected first citizen with the chain of office on, particularly the children."

However, Martin Lee, the council leader, said the council chairman should wear the civic chains.

He added that Egginton: "really should be concentrating on running Mansfield District Council as a medium-sized business and also driving the district forward.

"This is not 21st Century politics - this is parading around in bling."

The chains have been removed from a display of civic regalia and locked in a safe until the dispute is resolved.
