Funding Secured For New Mental Health Unit
The Welsh Government has confirmed £14.3m will be spent to create a new low-level secure mental health unit at Glanryhd Hospital.
The new 28 in-patient unit will replace the facilities in Cefn Coed Hospital.
Low secure services are currently based within the Intensive Support and Intervention Service (ISIS), a 14 bed in-patient facility at Cefn Coed Hospital. In addition, in-patient places are commissioned via several out-of-county healthcare providers.
However, the existing unit in Cefn Coed does not meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and is no longer considered fit for purpose.
The new centre is another phase of the £92m Reshaping Mental Health Services in Swansea (RMHSS) Programme.
Health Minister Mark Drakeford said: "This new unit will provide appropriate, safe and secure facilities for people detained under the Mental Health Act. It brings services closer to home for patients, their relatives, visitors and staff.
"Moreover, it provides a safe, secure and therapeutic environment with improved dignity and privacy, housed within fit for purpose facilities."
Andrew Davies, Chairman of ABMU Health Board added: "This is another sign of ABMU's commitment to improving mental health services in our area. I recently saw for myself the site clearance works and I look forward to seeing the completion of this exciting development."

Guidance for women's mental health strategy launched
Health Minister, Rosie Winterton, today launched guidance for a Women's Mental Health Strategy during a visit to Mental Health services in Sheffield. Social isolation and poverty are much more common in women, as is the experience of child sexual abuse, domestic violence and sexual violence, the minister said.

Review of mental health nurses announced
The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) has announced plans for a new framework for mental health nursing. CNO Chris Beasley said that the review of mental health nursing would look at a number of issues, including race equality, health promotion, child protection and the development of non-medical prescribing.
