Inmates Employed For Market Research
Inmates from a Wolverhampton prison are being employed to carry out market research in a scheme criticised as being "incredibly naïve".
Prisoners from HMP Oakwood and Drake Hall, Staffordshire, are being paid to work in a call centre, carrying out market research for insurance companies, according to the BBC.
Despite criticism of the work scheme, the Ministry of Justices has said that all prisoners working as part of the initiative have completed a risk assessment, all calls are supervised and there are stringent security measures in place.
A spokesperson is reported as saying: "We do not want prisoners sitting idle in their cells when they should be working towards their rehabilitation."

Plans Announced To Make Young People Work For Benefits
The Prime Minister has announced a proposal for 18 to 21-year-olds claiming benefits to do daily work experience. The proposed reform, known as Community Work Programme, would see young people not in work, education or training, required to complete daily work experience, alongside continuing to look for work in order to qualify for benefits.

Prison officers suspended over corruption claims
Fourteen prison officers have been suspended from HMP Pentonville following allegations of corruption. A spokesperson for the Prison Service confirmed that the prison officers had been suspended over allegations which concerned trafficking and "inappropriate relations" with prisoners.

Prisons face overcrowding crisis
Prisons in England and Wales are under "enormous pressure" and are facing a "looming overcrowding crisis", according to a charity report. The Prison Reform Trust reported that prison numbers have crept up again since Christmas rising to over 77,000 again.

Tagged prisoners on crime spree
Prisoners released from jail early and placed under tagging scheme have committed over 1,000 crimes. According to the figures obtained by the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) these include one murder, four manslaughters, over 700 assaults and hundreds of other crimes recorded since 1999.

Call For Degree Educated Prison Officers
A charity for Penal Reform has today released a report recommending that prison officers are educated to degree level in order to better manage prisons and reduce reoffending rates. At present, prison officers undergo eight weeks training before taking responsibility for safety and security within a prison.
