Govt To Pilot New Emergency Text Alert System
A new mobile phone emergency alerts system, which sends text messages to people in areas affected by flooding, industrial accidents and other disasters, is to tested in three UK cities, amid fears that the system could be targetted by hackers.
Residents in Easingwold, North Yorkshire, Leiston in Suffolk and Glasgow will be used in a pilot scheme of the new system, which is based on similar systems used in the US, the Netherlands and Australia.
The government are working with mobile providers O2, Vodafone and EE, and the scheme is due to start this month and continue into October.
A report on the new system is expected in early 2014.

New pet passports to be introduced
A new EU-wide system of passports for pet dogs and cats is to be introduced this weekend. The key feature of the scheme will be a single European passport which gives details of the animal's identity and vaccination record. One of the benefits of the new style document is that it also records tick and tapeworm treatment within the passport.

New rules set to resolve credit disputes more easily
The government has announced new rules today designed to create an independent ombudsman that can provide an easier route to resolving credit disputes. Under present rules, borrowers can only take lengthy and costly court action if they challenge an agreement with a lender other than a bank or building society.

Terrorist threat rating system simplified
The official rating of terrorist threats to the UK has been simplfied and reduced to five levels instead of seven. The levels of alert are now: low, moderate, substantial, severe and critical.

Trawlermen Consultation Launched
The Government today launched a consultation on its new scheme to compensate trawlermen who lost their livelihoods following the 1970s 'Cod Wars'. The consultation runs until 22 May. The Government intends to open the new scheme to applications in the summer.
