Labour Pledge Action If Energy Companies Defy Price Freeze
Labour leader Ed Miliband has said that a Labour government would implement a 20-month gas and electric prize freeze should his party win the 2015 election.
News of the freeze was welcomed by consumer groups but it is understood that the "big six" energy firms have warned of "serious consequences".
Miliband however hit back, saying that he was prepared to "take action" if energy companies raised prices ahead of a planned freeze.
The Lib Dem energy secretary Ed Davey also warned that such a move would "risk the lights going out".
It is understood that the Labour leader has written to the six main energy suppliers to stress that without changes, taxpayer-funded guarantees to energy firms might not be sustainable.
