Poundland Profit Increase Fuels Expansion Plan

Poundland could open over 1,000 stores in the UK as it has seen a steady rise in profits.

The firm's profits increased 15% in the year to March.

The discount chain, which currently has 458 stores across the UK, recorded total sales of £880m for the year to March, with the store now considering expansion.

Poundland owner Jim McCarthy said that the discount store is now part of the mainstream UK retail sector, adding that: "Over time I'm confident that we will have over 1,000 Poundland stores in the UK."

Poundland To Buy 99p Stores For £55m
Poundland is to buy 99p stores for £55m, subject to approval by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). It has offered a cash consideration of £47.5m and is also proposing the issue of new Poundland Shares with a value of £7.5m. The company would take ownership of 251 stores, trading as 99p stores or Family Bargains.

Next Annual Profit Increases Of 11%
Clothing retailer Next, which is the biggest in the sector in Britain, has reported a pre-tax profit rise of 11.8%, to almost £700m. The growth in its online and catalogue business, the retailer said. Next total pre-tax profit was £695.2m to the end of January, comapred to the previous financial year it was £621.6m.

Doncaster Tesco Drivers To Strike For 48 hours
More than 180 drivers at the Tesco distribution centre in Doncaster will strike for 48 hours next week, disrupting supplies to Tesco stores across the region. The strike will start at 00:05 on Tuesday 9 October and will end at 00:05 on Thursday 11 October and will cause havoc in supplying the Tesco stores in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Sluggish retail sales growth peaks in June
The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed that in June the underlying rate of growth in retail sales volumes was the highest so far this year. However, the annual growth has remained the lowest for more than six years, according to data released today by the ONS.
