Unions Hopeful Of Saving Jobs At Portsmouth Ship Yard

Following two days of talks shop stewards at Portsmouth dockyard are expected to meet today with BAE Systems management to find out the fate of the city's shipbuilding industry.

It follows an announcement last week by BAE Systems that it planned to cut some 1,775 jobs, ending shipbuilding altogether.

It is understood that union officials have been hopeful of retaining some shipbuilding at the south coast yard.

The outcome of talks between union stewards and management is not yet known, but BAE's decision on the yard is expected to be announced today.
