Gurkha End Hunger Strike As Govt Agrees To Hold Inquiry

A former Gurkha has ended a 14-day hunger strike after a group of MPs announced plans to hold an inquiry into Gurkha pensions and other issues.

Gyanraj Raj has been camped out on Whitehall since 7 November, threatening to starve himself to death.

Mr Raj said his experience was "so hard, so difficult", and cautioned: "We are yet to win."

Newcastle United Veto Slides Outside Stadium

Newcastle United has vetoed a plan to erect slides outside the clubs St James' Park stadium.

Plans to "inject some fun" by building two "travel accelerators" beside the car park near the stadium were revealed in February.

However, those plans have now been shelved after landowner Newcastle United said it was "no longer available for use".

Seal Rescued From Cool Chamber Of Nuclear Power Plant

A grey seal has been rescued after current dragged the mammal into Wylfa nuclear power station on Anglesey.

The RSPCA were alerted by staff at the plant who discovered the seal in cooling chambers at the Cemaes Bay station.

The female seal was unharmed in the incident and was quickly recovered.

Police Seal Second House In Norwich Murder Investigation
An investigation has been launched following the discovery of an elderly woman's body at a house in Norwich. According to reports the woman is believed to have been sexually assaulted and subjected to a sustained assault. Police confirmed the body was discovered at a house in The Avenues at about 17:30 on Sunday.

Armed Police Seal Off Lincoln Flats
A 26-year-old man has been arrested after armed police sealed off a block of flats in Lincoln. Police were called to the Moorland Avenue area just before 7.30pm on Wednesday night after a police-installed alarm was activated. Officers attending the scene were met by a man carrying what was thought to be a gun.

Press Left In The Cold Over Seal Cull
The Department of Fisheries for Canada has refused press access to the annual baby seal cull in the Gulf of St Lawrence and Newfoundland. Sixty observers asked to be allowed to watch the shooting and clubbing of about 275,000 baby harp seals.

Antarctic scientist dies after seal attack
A British scientist has been killed in a seal attack while snorkelling at an Antarctic research station. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) announced today that marine biologist Kirsty Margot Brown, 28, died at Rothera Research Station on the Antarctic Peninsula yesterday.

Drug Dealer Ordered To Repay £23k
A 27-year-old man sentenced to prison earlier this year for drug dealing has been ordered to repay more than £23,000 under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
