Aircraft Causes Delays At Stansted Airport
Flights arriving at Stansted Airport have faced delays after landing equipment was damaged by an incoming flight.
It is understood a Gulfstream G550 jet damaged a section of the airport's instrument landing system (ILS), but was able to land safely. The ILS is a radio beam transmitter that incoming aircraft can follow in order to be able to land in poor visibility.
The incident was reported early on Tuesday morning and air accident investigators have launched an inquiry.
In a statement, the airport said departing flights were not affected by the incident, but incoming flights were likely to be subject to delays or cancellations.
A spokesperson is quoted as saying: "NATS, who are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ILS equipment, have engineers on site and are currently working to the resolve the issue and return to the airfield to normal operations as quickly as possible.
"As a result, flights will be subject to delay and cancellations so passengers are advised to check their flight status on their airline website.
"We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused."
