BBC Licence Could Be Extended For Online Content
The director general of the BBC has called for the license fee to be extended to include people watching programmes via the iPlayer service.
Speaking at a media conference in Oxford, Tony Hall said that there was "room for modernisation" within the license fee, allowing it to apply to "the consumption of BBC TV programmes, whether live on BBC One or on-demand via the iPlayer."
Lord Hall also used his speech to defend the broadcasters £145.50 licence fee.
Currently the licence covers everyone in the UK who watches or records BBC programmes when they are shown but does not cover watching via the BBC's on-demand iPlayer.
