Childcare Costs More Than Mortgage
Many parents in Britain are paying more on average for childcare compared to what they spend on their mortgage according to a study by The Family and Childcare Trust.
Families are spending more than £7,549 a year on childcare for one child in part-time nursery and another in an after-school club.
Full-time childcare costs are almost £11,700, two-thirds more than an average mortgage. The study is based on information gathered by the trust from local authority family or children's information services in England, Wales and Scotland.
According to the inquiry childcare is becoming increasingly unaffordable with a 27% rise in costs since 2009 while salaries have remained the same.
Government spends £6bn on supporting childcare every year and the report shows that during the current Parliament course it will have put an additional £1bn for supporting childcare.
