Worker Dies At Crossrail Project In London

A 43-year-old construction worker has died on the Crossrail project.

The man is understood to have died from fatal head injuries after a piece of concrete fell onto his head.

The worker had been spraying concrete on to excavated ground, some 32ft (10m) down a tunnel in Holborn, central London, when the incident happened.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 5.40am on Friday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Unite regional officer Guy Langston said: "Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the worker who has been tragically killed today.

"Unite is particularly concerned about health and safety at the site because this is not the first serious incident. In December 2012, a worker sustained horrific burns when he cut through a cable."

Work at the site is suspended as an inquiry takes place. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.

Lawyers Stage Second Walkout

Thousands of barristers opposed to legal aid cuts across England and Wales are staging their second walkout this year.

The move, taking place on Friday (7 March), will leave empty courthouses in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool.

The Criminal Bar Association (CBA) has said the cuts are "crippling".

Exams Marked Wrongly By Teachers

More than 700 students have wrongly passed literacy and numeracy tests after hundreds of trainee teachers marked them incorrectly, it is understood.

The candidates were incorrectly awarded marks which meant that they passed papers they should have failed in the last academic year. A further 27 students, were judged to have failed tests they should have passed, and did not go on to pass in subsequent attempts.

Some of the mistakes date back to April 2010.

The errors were revealed in a written statement from Schools Minister David Laws, and relate only to England.

Mr Laws added that retrospective passes would be given to people who had incorrectly failed, but no action would be taken over candidates who had been wrongly judged to have passed the exams.
