Commission calls for clearer picture of charity work
The Charity Commission has today outlined new ways in which charitable organisations can utilise existing recommended practice frameworks to make their operating procedures more transparent for the public.
The guidance is published at a time when the sector is awaiting the outcome of a consultation summary and Government intentions following publication of a Strategy Unit report entitled 'Private Action, Public Benefit'. It comes in response to a growing recognition within the charity sector of the need to improve the quality of trustees' annual reporting to provide stakeholders with a clear appraisal of the work that charities do and what they achieve.
The guidance, 'Reporting the activities and achievements of charities' (CC59) is available from the Commission's website. It explains the existing recommendations for reporting activities and achievements and provides a checklist of key points to help trustees explain their charity's performance in the annual report.
Jane Hatfield, Head of Development at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, said: "This welcome guidance makes clear that financial information alone is not enough. Charities need to get better at explaining the impact and outcomes of the work they do and what it actually achieves. This guidance will help trustees to develop this aspect of their reports in a clear and practical way."
