Rusedski fined £1,500 following outburst during match
Tennis player Greg Rusedski has received a £1,500 fine following an outburst made on Wednesday afternoon during his second-round defeat at Wimbledon.
The incident happened near the end of the match – against US player Andy Roddick – when Rusedski mistakenly thought a line judge had called on a serve from Roddick, although the source of the call had come from the crowd. Losing his cool, the British-Canadian player then directed a tirade of verbal abuse towards chair umpire Lars Graff, who refused to replay the contested point. Rusedski went on to lose the match 7-6 7-6 7-5.
Tournament referee Alan Mills decided to fine the 29-year-old player £1,500 for "audible obsencity", although the penalty is seen as relatively lenient as such outbursts can carry a penalty of up to £7,000.
Rusedski apologised for his behaviour during the after-match press conference. He said: "In the third set I lost it a little bit and I apologise for my language.
"There's no way I should have done it and I have only myself to blame. It was not necessary, I regret it and I am sorry."
