Ministers Back Decriminalisation Of Non-Payment Of TV Licence
A legal change that would see non-payment of the TV licence fee become a civil, rather than criminal matter, has been backed by Ministers, according to a report by the BBC.
The proposed "immediate decriminalisation" was introduced by a Conservative MP, but it is understood that Ministers have backed a revised amendment, which would see the changed introduced in the future.
The amended proposal also includes a review of the penalties issued for non-payment of the fee. This review is to be completed in 15 months.
The BBC claimed that decriminalising non-payment would cost broadcaster up to £200m.
