Schools And Children's Homes Face Investigation Over Jimmy Savile Abuse Claims
Twenty one children's homes and schools in England are to be investigated by local authorities in connection with Jimmy Savile abuse claims, the government has said.
The Department for Education said that the allegations concern institutions in Yorkshire, London, Manchester, Kent, Surrey or Devon relating to the 1960s, 70s and 80s where Savile may have abused more than 200 people over six decades, according to police.
The Education Secretary Michael Gove said: "This information was uncovered as part of the document review process undertaken by the Metropolitan Police Service on behalf of the Department of Health."
The former BBC DJ and presenter died in October 2011, aged 84, before the sex abuse scandal came to light.

Both the BBC director and deputy director of news have been asked to "step aside" pending the outcome of an internal review into the handling of the Jimmy Savile claims. The move follows a report into a separate Newsnight broadcast on abuse claims, which said the BBC must resolve a "lack of clarity" in the chain of command.

Jimmy Savile has been described as "predatory and opportunistic" following a police report which confirmed the late TV presenter committed sexual abuse offences at 14 hospitals. Commander Peter Spindler of the Metropolitan police said Savile had used his power and fame to "hide in plain sight".

'Arrogant' Savile Police Interview Condemned
A 2009 police interview with Jimmy Savile, in which he repeatedly denies abusing young girls, has been condemned by victims' groups. Commenting on the interview the National Association for People Abused in Childhood (Napac) said that Savile is not only arrogant, but is clearly "running rings around the police".
