Murder Charged Over 1998 Omagh Bombing
A 43-year-old man has been charged with the murders of 29 people in the Omagh bomb attack of 15 August, 1998.
According to reports, noted Republican Seamus Daly, of Co Monaghan was arrested by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PNSI) in Newry, County Down, on Monday.
The 43-year-old faces a total of 33 charges, including two connected to the blast 16 years agoand another two charges linked to an attempted explosion in Lisburn, County Antrim, in April, of the same year of the Omagh device.
Mr Daly, who always denied his involvement in the attack, is due to appear in court in Dungannon on Friday, according the PSNI.
No-one has ever been charged over the Omagh bombing in a criminal court, although relatives of some of the victims brought a landmark civil action against five men, including Mr Daly, who they claimed were responsible.
The court ruled that he and three of the others were liable, and they were later ordered to pay more than £1.5m in damages.
The 500lb bomb had been packed into a red Vauxhall Cavalier and was detonated by remote trigger in the shoppers packed Market Street.
A woman pregnant with twins, three generations of the same family and Spanish exchange students were among the 29 bomb victims of which fifteen were under age of 21.
More than 300 people were injured and many of them with life-changing wounds.
