Imperial Tobacco Announce Closure Of Nottingham Plant
Concerns have been raised for 540 jobs following the announcement that Imperial Tobacco is to shut its Nottingham plant, alongside the closure of two other plants in France.
The Nottingham plant produces Lambert & Butler, Embassy, Regal, Superkings (known as John Player) and JPS (John Player Special).
It is understood the closures are part of a plan to save £300m a year by September 2018.
The company has blamed declining industry sales in Europe, due to tough economic conditions, "excessive" duty increases and a growing blackmarket trade.
Employees, works councils and trade unions have been informed of the planned closures and the company is said to be working to support employees and "ensure that they are treated in a fair and responsible manner."
