Primark Sees Profits Up 26%

The giant discount fashion retailer Primark has seen its half-yearly operating profits rise 26% to £298m, while the owner Associated British Food (ABF) said its clothing arm saw the surge in profits in the 24 weeks to March 1 with incomes up 14% to £2.278bn.

The company, which started small in Ireland before taking on Europe, is now setting its eyes on America's traditional fashion retailers.

The giant chain saw a double-digit growth in Spain and Portugal, along with "very strong" growth in northern Europe.

The operating margin of the chain increased by 13.1% brought about by improved warehouse and distribution efficiencies and lower freight rates through its 269 global stores and it 9.6 million square-feet space, which expects to increase by a third more than that achieved last year.

ABF announced it decision to take Primark brand to the United States and it plans of opening a 70,000 square-foot store in Boston, ahead if the 2016 expansion plans.

Tesco Reports Worst Sales Figures In 40 Years
Tesco's chief executive Philip Clarke has admitted the chain's latest drop in sales, which is the third falling quarter in a row, represents the worst he has seen in his 40 years with the group. According to the supermarket chain, for the three months to 24 May like-for-like UK sales, including VAT and excluding petrol, fell by 3.7%.

Sainsbury's Announces 11% Profit Rise
Supermarket giant Sainsbury's is celebrating its 140th anniversary this month with better-than-expected annual profits, which are up more than 11% at £543 million. The profits surge means more than 120,000 staff at the UK's third-largest supermarket chain will share a £60m bonus pot.

Tesco reports profits rise
Britain’s leading supermarket group, Tesco, has reported an 18.7% rise in profits in their first-half sales figures. The supermarket giant saw pre-tax profits rise to £908 million for the 24 weeks to August 13, beating average forecasts of £886 million. The group also reported a rise in sales of 14.1% to £18.

Conservatives to crackdown on criminal profits
Conservative leader Michael Howard has announced plans to make it illegal for convicted criminals to profit from writing about their crimes. Under a Conservative government, Mr Howard said that royalties and fees would be treated as proceeds of crime and could be seized by authorities.
