Dorrell Quits As Commons Health Committee Chair
Stephen Dorrell, the former Conservative cabinet minister, has quit as head of the Commons health select committee with immediate effect,
Mr Dorrell communicated his decision in a letter to the Commons Speaker John Bercow and said he wanted to contribute to a debate on the health service for the 2015 election from a "less overtly political position".
He said he tried to chair the committee "in a way which emphasises the broad measure of agreement which believes exists across party divisions on the key objectives of health policy".
Despite this he said that he thought he would make a "more effective contribution" from a less political position.
He was health secretary in John Major's government in the 1990s among another political positions in the government. He was elected as head of the committee in 2010.
A new ballot is likely to be held for the vacant position.
